Celebrating a Year of the River Glen Gospel Justice Center!
A year ago, on Saturday July 23, 2022, we opened the doors to the River Glen Gospel Justice Center for the first time. Since then, we have been open 10 out of 12 months. We took the month of January off to give the volunteers a break, and June because we didn't have a lawyer available to serve that month.
We have filled 25 appointments (we offer 3 appointments a month) and we are fully booked for this Saturday, July 22. We have seen people from Naperville, Aurora, and Plainfield, and from as far off as South Elgin and Villa Park. We have helped walk-ins and people who made an appointment 2 months in advance.
People have come seeking legal advice on divorce, child custody, guardianship, domestic abuse, immigration, parental rights, eviction, harassment and family law. They are often full of fear and anxiety when they arrive. When they leave, having been listened to, prayed for, and given legal advice, they feel hopeful and relieved. In this small way, we seek to answer God's call in Micah 6:8 to "to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with [our] God."
The Justice Center is thriving, and we could use more volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please email Christy Palangattil at cpalangattil@gmail.com or Tom Ekin at 630-369-0285.
