Dear friends -
On the topic of joy: our new book club book, The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World, is the story of the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu meeting over the course of several days to celebrate their friendship and explore the meaning of life - pursuing joy. Here are a few quotes:
"Discovering more joy does not, I'm sorry to say, save us from the inevitablity of hardship and heartbreak. In fact, we may cry more easily, but we will laugh more easily, too. Perhaps we are just more alive." (Desmond Tutu)
"The problem is that our world and our education remain focused exclusively on external, materialistic values. We are not concerned enough with our inner values." (the Dalai Lama)
The conversation was opened with the prayer of the Holy Spirit: "Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of thy faithful people and kindles in them the fire of thy love. Send forth thy spirit and they shall be made new and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Amen" (Book of Joy, p 29).
Even if you aren't able to be part of the book club, I invite you to read along with us - strengthening our inner values and being reminded that the Holy Spirit is ever-present renewing us with fires of love and joy.
Grace, peace, and joy,
Jess
