Our congregation supports the needs of our members and the surrounding community through prayer, resources, and actions through mission programs of the Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) The church also directly sponsors international, national, Chicagoland, and local mission projects. Please see the Community Outreach page and the links below for details to learn more about these amazing missions.
Since its beginning in 1985, River Glen has committed the first 10 percent of all money received in regular offerings as our tithe to mission. The World Mission Team provides the leadership, structure and financial approval for River Glen mission-related projects and ministries. The team also is responsible for the One Great Hour of Sharing promotion and offering during Lent, as well as River Glen’s participation in the Feed My Starving Children program of preparing food packets.
The World Mission Team at River Glen is commissioned to select the missions to which our church will donate funds, and it is always looking for more people to join the team. The team receives requests from a variety of mission applicants, carefully considering and evaluating each mission to allocate the mission tithe from the previous year’s contributions. After using an objective rating matrix tool to rate and rank each mission, a subjective process of discussions and interviews determines mission support.
Team members are guided by the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, to say the witness and the Great Commandment in Matthew 22:37-40, to do the witness. We are also guided by Amos 5:24, “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream,” to address injustices.
Mission is a year-round activity to share and to involve the congregation in the exciting, challenging and life-changing work we are doing for Christ. Would you like to know more about the missions River Glen shares with partners near and far, and how to become more involved? Come join us; contact Ruth Dow, team leader, or the church office.
