The PNC bus continues to move down the road to our final destination of calling a new pastor to River Glen. We are finishing up interviews, continuing to listen to sermons, have conducted personal reference checks, and have now requested the Chicago Presbytery begin their executive check on a few of our final candidates.
Sending candidates for an executive check is a big step in this process. This means we have several candidates who seem like a good fit for our congregation and the executive check–which includes things like background checks and personality/leadership assessments—will ensure that the fit continues to feel and be right.
But the fit is just one part of the equation—our new pastor not only needs to be a fit for us (and we need to be a fit for them), but we are also paying attention to God’s call for River Glen. Is this the person that God is calling to be the leader of our congregation at this time? We believe that God has a plan for us—and a plan for each of the candidates we have met during this process. When we allow ourselves to be passionate in our commitment to discern and heed God’s call, God will always bless us.
But that “call” is not a rushed process—and that we all know. And now, even as we take a step forward with sending candidates for an executive check, you may be feeling some of the strain of this journey.
So, here we are—driving through the part of the PNC process where God’s timing is leading our efforts and prayer has become a constant part of our navigation. Prayer is a powerful tool and now more than ever I ask that you continue to keep our congregation, our pastoral candidates, the Chicago Presbytery and the PNC in your prayers.
We have been ending our weekly PNC meetings with this prayer and I thought I would share it with all of you today:
O God, by whom we are guided in judgement,
And who raises up for us light in the darkness,
Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties,
The grace to ask what you would have us do:
That your spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices,
And in your straight path we may not stumble:
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
As always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask a member of the PNC.
