In an effort to help our congregation Experience God’s Love and Make Jesus Known, River Glen has reached out in service to Longwood Elementary School. Longwood is a diverse and economically disadvantaged school, challenged to serve the many needs of its students and their families. Through various events and activities, our congregation has been in community with the families of Longwood—engaging them in fun game days, inviting them to participate in our worship services and events, and supplying them with much-needed educational materials and equipment such as books, school supplies and projectors.
River Glen holds a monthly worship with communion and two 4-week Bible studies at Spring Meadows Senior Living. Interested in helping with River Glen’s ministry at Spring Meadows, contact Ruth Dow at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Angel Tree project is an event coordinated by the Board of Deacons to provide Christmas gifts to needy children of incarcerated parents.
Early each November, a Christmas tree is placed inside the church and adorned with angel decorations listing specific gift requests for the children. People then can pick an angel, purchase the requested gift, wrapped it and place it under the Christmas tree. The gifts are then delivered to the children to be opened on Christmas day.
The Angel Tree will be in the gathering area. The goal is to provide gifts for the children of residents at the Wayside Cross Rescue Mission Master’s Touch program. These men are unable to provide gifts for their children for any number of reasons.
If you wish to participate, please take an angel from the tree and purchase a gift or 2 appropriate for the age/gender shown on the angel. The primary need is for toys as there are other programs in place to provide clothing and other personal items Wrap the gift, attach the angel and return the gift. It can be placed underneath the Angel Tree. The Deacons will get the gifts to the mission in time to be distributed.

During the Christmas season, we are asked to contribute to many worthy causes, both through our church and elsewhere. Perhaps at no other time of the year are our hearts filled with the joy of giving and the desire to help our fellow man. Sometimes the need may seem overwhelming. There is, however, one donation you can make in particular that will be used throughout the New Year to help in many ways.
The Christmas Joy Offering is a very special opportunity during the Advent season to donate money to the missions of River Glen Church as well as the Presbyterian Church at large. Twenty percent of the Joy Offering is shared equally by the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions, which provides critical assistance to Presbyterian church workers and their families, and Presbyterian-affiliated racial ethnic schools and colleges, which enable students to develop their gifts and find their calling. The remaining 80 percent is directed to the River Glen Deacon Fund. The Deacon Fund is the working budget the Deacon Board uses to provide financial assistance to River Glen members and friends, as well as to organizations located in our community that have a higher level of expertise to make an even greater impact.
In the past, the River Glen Deacon Board has given donations to Bridge Communities, CROP Walk, DuPage PADS, Families Helping Families, Loaves & Fishes Community Food Pantry, Longwood School, Naperville Cares, the Naperville Police Chaplains Fund, and Wayside Cross Ministries.
Joy Offering envelopes will be available in the pews and from your friendly Deacon Board members. However, you do not have to wait until Christmas Eve to make your donation. It is important to River Glen that you use the envelopes and return your donation to church instead of making your donation online. The online donations made on the PCUSA web site do not come back to River Glen; they are disbursed equally between the Board of Pensions and Presbyterian-affiliated schools. In order for your gift to be used by the River Glen Deacons, you must use the Joy Offering envelope and return it to River Glen.
Without the generosity of River Glen members and friends at Christmas, the Deacons cannot provide the much-needed help some in our congregation and community might need in the coming year. This is the one and only time the Deacons request donations and receive the funds that will sustain their mission throughout the following calendar year. Please consider a gift to the Christmas Joy Offering, knowing that your blessings will be shared with those who are truly in need.
