River Glen Presbyterian Church welcomes author Jeanne Bishop for a two-part exploration of faith, forgiveness and restorative justice.
On Saturday, November 7th from 9:00am to Noon, Ms. Bishop will lead a workshop entitled “The Three R’s of Restorative Justice – Respect, Responsibility and Repairing – A Conversation”. Panelists include Judge Bob Anderson, presiding judge of the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of DuPage County; Dr. Dianne Moran, Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor of Psychology & Human Development at Benedictine University; and Rev. Mary Ann Donofrio, DuPage County Jail Chaplain.
On Sunday, November 8th during River Glen’s weekly 10:30 AM worship service, Ms. Bishop will share the story of how she traveled the long road toward both forgiving her sister’s killer and seeking to reconcile her relationship with him. Her lesson is one of moving beyond mere forgiveness to the deeper waters of redemption and grace.
Both events are open to the public, particularly those whose lives have been touched by violence and the people who provide support to them. The cost for the Saturday event is $10.00 per person for the general public. Professional social workers and psychologists can attend for $30.00 and receive 3 continuing education units. Sunday worship is open to all.
Ms. Bishop’s book, Change of Heart: Justice, Mercy and Making Peace with My Sister’s Killer, relates her uneven journey to confronting and reconciling with a murderer. An unflinching account of the personal cost of advocating for mercy for people convicted of serious crimes, Change of Heart takes on the larger issues of restorative justice, life sentences and incarceration in the criminal justice system. Best-selling author John Grisham describes Change of Heart as “a tragic story of senseless violence, horrific loss and, in the end, forgiveness that is astonishing. I kept asking myself – ‘As a Christian, could I be as strong and merciful as Jeanne Bishop?’ I have my doubts.”
